Day 12 – Béziers to Cucuron (Provence)

The day started with glorious sunshine and a seriously good hotel-breakfast which more than made up for the mediocrity of the room. As single male motorcyclists are wont to be I was plonked at the extreme end of the ground-floor corridor which although at first irritating turned out to be a small blessing. I drove the bike round the back of the hotel to where the cooks and staff parked and could unload and load directly through the window of my room saving me untold hundreds of meters in the hotel dragging all my stuff past firedoors et cetera. I had transformed the room in minutes into a chinese laundry to get as much stuff as possible dried and most things had at least not gone mouldy overnight.

Anyway, having packed the bike again I decided to find a quiet bit of beach and say goodbye to Nick (more below) in peace and quiet. I went off to Agde, through the old town and out down the land spit between Agde and Sète. There I found a quiet place to park up about mid-way between and took my essential things with me to the beach.

The reason I was here was to say goodbye to a friend who died in a car accident at the very end of june 2005. He had moved out to Spain a year or two beforehand having sold his part in a motorcycle dealership and was setting up a new business with boats, maritime engines and that sort of thing. He loved it down at the sea with the Spanish way of life. He met and finally married in 2004, we went down for the wedding. On the way back from his first anniversary dinner he came off the road and hit a tree, Nick hit the steering column, suffered aortic rupture and died at the scene. I have always regretted not having gone to his funeral, our first-born child was 3 weeks old, we were about to move up to near Denmark in about a weeks time and we were short of cash. All good reasons not to go but I still regret not having made it. I shall write the below in German because that was the language we usually used together.

I sat there for a long while and looked at the sea, I listened in to the album that Nick listened to a lot then by St. Germain – Tourist and remembered blasting down the Römerstrasse outside the American headquarters in the evening with three loud old Guzzi´s abreast, the three of us racing off the lights going down to Fernando´s. Blasting through the tunnel under the Schloss at speeds no longer possible now. It was a great and slightly crazy time, we had a lot of fun.

Then I got back to the bike, saddled up and rolled towards Cucuron to meet up with Jon. The clouds were gathering a bit but managed to sneak round south of the worst and arrived at Jon´s place.
